Account Trail: designing, building and running our own accounting application
The product
Account Trail is free, open-source accounting software for freelancers and small businesses. It handles invoices, expenses, bills, stock, budgets and reports in any country and currency. It has a free plan with no time limit and a Pro plan at $9/month.
The challenge
Accounting software has little room for error. Numbers must add up, currency conversions must be correct, and the product has to be simple enough for someone who isn't an accountant. It also had to work as a hosted service and as a version customers can run on their own servers.
What we built
Expenses, bills and stock
Expense tracking across 14 categories with receipt attachments, supplier bills with due dates, and stock that updates itself as items are bought and sold, with valuation and reorder alerts.
Budgets and reports
Monthly and yearly budgets that generate draft transactions, plus profit and loss, receivables aging and payables aging reports.
Multi-currency
Invoicing in the customer's currency, converted at the rate on the transaction date so reports stay accurate over time.
Hosted and self-hosted
A hosted service at accounttrail.com, plus a Docker image running on PostgreSQL for customers who want to host it themselves.
Subscriptions and billing
Free and Pro plans with monthly and annual billing. Downgrading returns an account to Free without losing data.
